The idea in here that struck me as me most frightening is that news sources would get paid based on the popularity of their content...and we're already doing that today.
I doubt that we'll ever lose the big journals (I resent the prediction that the Times will only be read by the wealthy and the elderly; I'll be 39 in 2014 and I plan on reading it. Harumph!), but I do think that by meshing actual historical events into a predicted history makes this sci-fi tale all seem eerily plausible.

That's awesome, Rhea! I thought of Minority Report, too.
Ms Tearose, I agree that it's annoying and scary to have someone out there remembering everything I've chosen in the past (especially in terms of purchases) and making recommendations for me...but what if it works? What if a computer can make a better decision for you than you could make yourself? It may be my birthright to have a drawer full of ugly lipsticks that I never wear, but might I be better off if there was a voice (even a 2001, Hal-type voice) saying "I think you'd be happier if you tried this other one instead".
